Species of wood

The species of wood I currently work with are maple, cedar, and fir. I will be adding oak and arbutus to this list as well as others if requested. All species have their particular benefits and draw backs and I can help point them out to you when deciding.

Unique Tree to furniture

All of the my wood has been salvaged, milled, and dried by me. I have a passion for the whole process - from milling downed trees/logs, to the final stage of finishing, and finally, seeing the wood piece added to a home. The wood is given a second life to be cherished, displayed, used and honoured.

Wood characteristics

The beauty of a piece of wood is a combination of shape, colour, species, and wood characteristics, but ultimately it comes down to personal preference. Wood that is different from normal straight grain is called figured wood. Below are some examples of figured wood.

Bark Inclusions: Areas within the wood where bark has become embedded; these can be removed easily creating pockets or holes.

Spalting: Is the dark lines within the wood caused by moisture and is the start of rot. If caught early enough it adds character without drastically diminishing the structural integrity of the piece.

Burls: Deformed growth on a tree that looks like bumps on the tree’s surface. Within the burl the grain becomes random, making it look quite different.

Inside the wood burl

curly maple: Ribbon looking or stripped looking lines in the wood, giving the wood depth and a textured look.

Wood is art

Salvaging Wood

I source only local wood species native to the west coast. All of my slabs are milled using an Alaskan Mill, and I don’t sell any wood I’ve not milled and dried personally. This way I can tell you the story of the tree, and where it was located. As well, this allows me to be certain every piece is dry and holds me one hundred percent accountable for the process and the final product of each piece.

Epoxies and pigment

Epoxy is used to give a piece of wood strength, uniqueness and customizability. The epoxy I use is Ecopoxy; an eco-friendly sustainable product. I am also not opposed to glass or any other ideas you might have. Pigment and colours: any colour you can think of can be made and used in any piece.

Finishing

I use mostly Rubio Monocoat, which is a hard wax oil finish , because of its durability and natural look. I also use a ceramic coating to add scratch resistance.

Metal Legs

The look and strength of metal legs compliments the wood slabs and I can custom make/design them as well.

Ideas of what to add to your home

This is where the creativity starts for you, if you have any ideas of what you invision for your home i can help you bring it to life, whether its a table, barn doors, headboard, or anything else you could think of, i love trying new things and creating unique one of a kind pieces.

Keep in mind every part is customizable and interactive in this process of creating a beautiful piece to fit your space
